An on-line presentation by Simon Stafford

Namibia has 3.4x the land mass of the United Kingdom, yet a population of only 2.5 million people; after Greenland, the Falkland Islands, Mongolia and Western Sahara it has the lowest population density in the world. Since 2016 I have undertaken three trips to the country visiting and, photographing the wildlife and landscape, in areas as diverse as the Zannier Reserve, near Windhoek, to the vast expanse of the Namib-Rand Desert, the oldest desert in the word and, the world renown Etosha National Park. During my presentation I will show a selection of my work from this on-going project. I will also show a selection of wildlife images taken during the past five years during visits to Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa.

Simon Stafford ARPS – Biography

From a young age, Simon developed a passion and fascination for the natural world. He devoted much of his time to observing and learning about the wildlife nearby his family’s home in rural Kent. His interested in photography began some years later while studying Biophysics at Aberdeen University; completely self-taught, he talked his way into a job as the photographer for the university& weekly newspaper and has been taking photographs ever since.

During the past thirty-five years he has accrued a wealth of experience in both film and digital photography covering a broad range of subjects; for the past fifteen years he has concentrated on photographing wildlife and nature.

His pictures have been published in newspapers, books and magazines, including among the UK photographic press Practical Photography, Digital SLR Photography, Professional Photographer and Nikon Pro; he is also the Technical Editor of Nikon Owner magazine.

Simon is not only a photographer, but also the author of over twenty-five books on the Nikon camera system. An experienced tutor who presents a wide range of photography seminars and workshops, furthermore he leads landscape, travel, and wildlife photography tours regularly in the UK, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Among the many awards Simon has received for his photography he was named as the Overall Winner – Mammals category, in the Natural History Museum / Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2016 competition and, for four out of the past five years been shortlisted in the same competition.
